Undergraduate: Research Experience Program (REP)
University Coordinator: John Augusto, Office of the Vice Provost for Research, (jaugusto@ku.edu; 864-7351)
Psychology Contact: Paul Atchley (patchley@ku.edu; 864-9803)
From The Office of Research and Graduate Studies:
"The Research Experience Program (REP) is one of three undergraduate certificate programs at KU
aimed at providing official recognition of an identified experience on a student's academic transcript.
The other two are the Global Awareness Program http://www.international.ku.edu/gap/ and the in
Service Learning Program http://www.servicelearning.ku.edu/certification.shtml. REP provides KU
students with a unique learning opportunity grounded in KU's role as a major national research
university."
Successful completion of this program is noted by a stamp on the student's transcript.
To complete REP certification in Psychology, a student must:
- complete a set of courses designed to enhance their research competency and
- must demonstrate competency by presenting research in a public forum
Course work (one from each category)
Research design core: PSYC 310, 618, 620, 622 or 624
Research analysis core: PSYC 300 or equivalent
Laboratory experience: PSYC 460, 480, 481, 482 or equivalent
Demonstration of Competency (one of the following)
Presentation of work at a conference (local or national)
Authorship/co-authorship on a manuscript submitted for publication
Completion of a senior thesis
Notes on the demonstration of competency: While most psychology undergraduates will complete the
course work for the REP certification in due course of study, the demonstration of competency is a
student’s first real introduction to the community of science. It is a step above and beyond the normal
student advancement, and critical component of the REP distinction. The presentation can be at the
KU Undergraduate Research symposium or at a national conference such as the annual meeting of
the APA. Authorship requires only that the manuscript is submitted for publication, not that is
accepted for publication. Using a senior thesis to fulfill this demonstration requires that the thesis is
actually completed and accepted.
Completion of the program
Once students have completed the requirements for REP certification, they should download and
complete the certification form (http://www.rgs.ku.edu/depts/training/rep/rep.shtml). Students should
contact Paul Atchley (patchley@ku.edu, 864-9803) for final certification or with any additional
questions about the program.
